Music Under the Star Series at the Capitol Mall Amphitheater

The Capitol Mall Amphitheater is the newest outdoor venue in the Austin Museum District. It is located in front of the George HW Bush State Office Building at the intersection of MLK Blvd. and the Capitol Mall.  Make plans to attend one of the three nights of electrifying performances at this new performance space.

Bring the whole family, camp chairs, and blankets to enjoy an incredible lineup of Texas artists. Food and drinks are available for purchase at all Music Under the Star concerts. Outside food and drinks are not permitted at this event.

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with the South Austin Moonlighters, known locally for performing in finer honky-tonks and listening rooms. Then, Austin-based musician, singer, storyteller, and songwriter Guy Forsyth returns for an unforgettable headlining performance.

Native America: In Translation, Curated by Wendy Red Star

Artist Wendy Red Star assembles the wide-ranging artists who offer contemporary perspectives work of nine Indigenous on memory, identity, and the history of photography. “I was thinking about young Native artists and what would be inspirational and important for them as a road map,” said Red Star.

This road map spans intergenerational image makers representing various Native nations and affiliations and working in photography, installation, multimedia assemblage, and video.  Among them, the late Cree artist Kimowan Metchewais investigates landscape and language through his evocative Polaroids. Martine Gutierrez’s stylish self-portraits pose as fashion ads and question conceptions of ideal beauty.

Together, their work confronts the historic and often fraught relationship between photography and the representation of Native Americans while also reimagining what it means to be a citizen in North America today.
