The Capitol Complex Project Ph. II wishes you a safe weekend of relaxation and reflection as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
On Memorial Day we pay our respects to all the military personnel who have given their lives for our freedom. Across our nation, our Stars & Stripes will be on display. There will be parades, cookouts, special memorial services, and speeches, and we will share and celebrate our pride as Americans in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
The Capitol grounds and surrounding area are home to many landmarks that pay homage to generations of brave Texans. As you plan your Memorial Day activities consider a visit downtown to stroll the beautiful Capitol grounds and celebrate the heroes who serve.
Texas State Cemetery
https://cemetery.tspb.texas.gov/
Just blocks east of the State Capitol, the Texas State Cemetery is the final resting place of governors, senators, legislators, congressmen, judges, and other legendary Texans who have made the state what it is today. Throughout the years, other notable Texans have been buried on cemetery grounds including Stephen F. Austin, General Albert Sidney Johnston, Governor Allan Shivers, Governor John Connally, and Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock.
The annual Memorial Day service will take place in the southwest section of the cemetery, called “Republic Hill” on Monday, May 26 at 11 a.m.
The Gold Star Mothers Monument

This monument was dedicated at the Texas State Cemetery in 2001. It honors mothers who lost children in service to the United States military. The name Gold Star Mothers originated from the service flag that family members could display when a relative was at war. While serving, the flag is a white field with a single blue star. If the soldier is killed during military operations, the blue star is replaced by gold.
Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday – Friday, 909 Navasota Street, Austin, TX 78702
